In 1899, Charles “Mile-a Minute” Murphy set a speed record by riding a bicycle behind a train on Long Island, New York, and completed a mile in 57.8 seconds. The bicycle used in this record attempt is owned by the Springfield Museums Association in Massachusetts, but has been in storage for the last three years. Now, a town on Long Island wants to bring the bicycle home, and has offered $20,000 for the bicycle.
This photo of the bike is from the Nassau County Museum Archive when it was on display there.
Personally, if I was investing $20,000 for a bicycle, I’d probably opt for something made of carbon, and titanium, but it’s nice to want to own a piece of history to put on display. Read more about the story of Mile-a-minute Murphy here or here.
I had a feeling when I was reading this that the town was Babylon. Wonder if they’ll put it in the Historical Society.
I can’t not reblog this.
me neither
